I regularly visit the beaches of Cape Cod Bayfor sunset photography. Needless to say sunsets never disappoint here. No difference on one of my latest trips where I photographed at Skaket Beach. This was a new beach and it took a bit of time and exploring before settling on a pleasing composition. I finally succeeded when I found some nice beach grass leading into the picture. While the sun was nearing the horizon colors in the sky exploded. A saturated blue with clouds colored in pink and orange dominated the sky. The spectacle was beautifully reflected in the Cape Cod Bay and beach. I used a split ND filter to balance the bright sunset sky with the darker foreground directly in front of me. Aperture setting was f/14 providing a shutter speed of a second at ISO100. During routine post processing I adjusted lighting, contrast, color saturation before removing imperfections and sharpening the final Cape Cod photography image of

Nauset Light in Eastham, MA on Cape Cod is one of New England's most iconic lighthouses. The red and white structure stands tall atop Nauset Beach and the Cape Cod National Seashore. It is well known as the logo for Cape Cod Potato Chips and also goes by Nauset Beach Light. The famous lighthouse makes for a great photography subjects at any time of the day. I recently ventured out to capture the lighthouse at night under a sky full of stars.

At daylight the parking lot is filled with beach lovers and parking is a hassle; arriving at sunrise, sunset or night makes it a no-hassle activity and free. It's a short walk across the street and you can get to work right away.

That night mostly clear sky was dominant, perfect for star and night photography of Nauset Light. I quickly set up tripod and camera gear and got to work. I used my Canon 7D with a 10-22mm lens set at f/3.5. The shutter speed was 20 seconds at ISO1600. During post -processing of the lighthouse photo I minimized noise, adjusted white balance, lighting, color saturation and contrast. Before sharpening the final image I removed dust spots, imperfection and further minimized digital noise.

Photography Guide to Boston

Last Sunday we made a day trip to Cape Cod. We had a great family time while enjoying swimming at our favorite lake, having lunch at one of the best fish restaurant on Cape Cod, chilling on First Encounter Beach, strolling through Chatham and visiting our most favorite gallery. On our way home we stopped for ice cream at Sundae School Ice Cream in Harwich, MA. The weather turned truly dramatic and provided me with some extraordinary lighting. We checked one of my go to locations between Chatham and Harwich, where I photographed Cape Cod Solitude, as it was less than half a mile down the street. The red dinghy was still present but views of it are somewhat obstructed by a second larger red boat; no more solitude at this location. We quickly moved on and made a right turn towards Bell's Neck Road. Bell's Neck is a marsh area that is divided by the Herring River which beautifully winds through the field of marsh grasses. When I am out and about pursuing nature photography I am almost always instinctively attracted by the strong colors of a photographic object. This is the decisive moment for me when I decide it is worthwhile to pull out my camera and tripod to capture a natural delight. I am much more aware of colors and their effect on people then I used to be and I try to use them to my photographic advantage. For example, one connects the color red with energy, danger, strength and power but also with passion, desire and love as often conveyed in red roses. Yellow is the color of sunshine. In May 2016 I photographed myself and nearly 30,000 Boston University students, faculty, friends and family members at Nickerson Field during the 2016 BU Commencement. Commencement speaker Nina Tassler delivered an inspiring and engaging commencement speech.

Getting around in New Orleans by streetcar is one great way to the city of blues. There are multiple historic streetcars; the Canal Streetcar and is a favorite for tourists and locals alike. Photo Tip #7 of 20: Check for intruders in your composition. Is there something popping into the picture from the edge or side of the picture? Is there a tree branch, power line, or telephone poll that creeps into the shot stealing attention from the main photography subject? Recompose and remove it as I did in this butterfly photography picture. At first the background was very busy with branches of a nearby shrub. As a solution I had to move a little bit to the site and recompose the shot in front of a shrub that was further away and sunlit. What is the appropriate aperture setting?

Small apertures are set by choosing large f/stop numbers like f/11 and larger. Those camera settings provide maximum depth of field.

Large apertures on the other hand (small f-stop number like f/5.6 and smaller) minimize depth of field.

This weeks topic is taking care of your canvas Photography Art Investments. Taking properly care of your treasured canvas art print is easy! Below are a few tips that will help you to appropriately maintain your fine art investment so you can fully enjoy and appreciate your Canvas Prints for many years to come:

- Avoid direct sunlight as it breaks down the paper that the canvas print is printed on. It also may cause discoloration and fading. Use soft lighting such as artificial light to avoid discoloration and break down of the canvas print.

- Keep moisture in form of humidity low in the area where you hang the artwork. Humidity easily may damage canvas prints as it may cause mold and mildew on the canvas print and eventually resulting in significant damage or total loss of your valuable Photography Art.

- Remove dust carefully and regularly using clean, soft, and dry material as it will negatively impact the aesthetic quality of your canvas print. Avoid using a rough and heavy cloth to wipe away dust. Avoid using chemical cleaners to get rid of dust.

- Clean dirt spots on a canvas by lightly dampening a clean cloth with water and gently wiping the surface and sides of the canvas print.

- Do not continuously wipe your Photography Canvas Print too hard in the same area as you may cause damage to the layers of protective coating and ink.

- Avoid pressing down too hard on the canvas as you may leave an impression that remains permanent.

- Do not place anything on top of the canvas and avoid laying your canvas print upside down with the artwork facing down. You risk damaging your Artworks and eventually loosing it.

Boston offers many photo ops for the local and travel photography enthusiast. There are plenty of historic landmarks and architectural marvels around. The skyline can be admired from many spots. One hot spot for Boston Skyline Photographyis Memorial Drive in Cambridge, MA. I love this area because it easily allows adjusting on the go. The other night I photographed into the night. While the sky turned dark, the city lights provided an interesting contrast. The icing on the cake was a really calm Charles River that I haven't experienced in quite some time. The windless night and quiet waters made for an excellent skyline reflection. Aperture in this picture was set at f/11, providing an exposure time of 20 seconds at ISO200. This Boston waterfront landmark in the buzzing Seaport district is one of the oldest continuously working fish piers in the United States of America. The Empire Fulton Ferry State Park right next to Brooklyn Bridge Park is a great photo location to photograph the New York skyline and take a panorama photography image of the Brooklyn Bridge. This image of this iconic New York landmark is comprised of 7 individual photographs taking in the wee hours and than stitched in photoshop to one large photography picture of the Brooklyn Bridge and New York City skyline. The clouds added some additional interest and the long exposure times created the silky water effects in the East River.

On our last trip to Europe we mastered a long journey from Linz, Austria to Amsterdam, Netherlands. It turned out to be a grueling long drive but came with one of the greatest and most memorable adventures on our entire 3 country Europe tour.

The total driving distance from Linz to Amsterdam is about 950 km or about 625 miles or 10 hours. Linz is the capital of Upper Austria and the Danube flows right through the middle of it. It's a beautiful lively city with a scenic old town and main square.

About 2 hours into the drive near lunchtime we passed the Danube for the tenth time when I spotted a beautiful viaduct bridge. At that moment I decided to get off the Autobahn and told my wife that we would be looking for a beer garden next to the river. She laughed and said let's do it. Boston Nightlight was taken from a new location that I recently scouted while driving home from a fun trip to Hunts Photo & Video in Melrose, MA.

It is always very exiting to explore a new spot that shows Boston from a different angle and in a new light. I haven't seen this view of the Hub online yet but I am sure other photographers have discovered it as well. Equipped with my longest Canon prime lens and a 1.4x telezoom extender I made my way over. I always get super pumped when I discover a new Boston Skyline location. This one was on my bucket list for many years. The evening light on my visit was beautiful and a clear blue sky was predominant. Parking was surprisingly easy and the best photo location to capture my vision of the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge, the Custom House of Boston, One International Place and parts of the TD Bank North Garden in one image was only steps away. I set up tripod and equipped my camera with a Canon 70-200mm and 1.4x tele converter, making it an approximately 420 telezoom lens. Landscape versus Portrait format is one of the first decisions that a photographer must make after finding a suitable location and subject. Photo Tip #1: Plan your New England leaf peeping or fall foliage photography trip well ahead of time this year. In my experience "High Color" is the preferred time to find these glorious New England fall colors.

Photo Tip #2: Get out after a rain storm has passed to take advantage of beautiful lighting conditions when the sunlight breaks through and provides spectacular lighting condition. The air is clearest in the morning and after rain storms making for good times to strive for stunning and scenic autumn landscape photography compositions.

Photo Tip #3: Do not be fooled and discouraged by an overcast and rainy day weather forecast. Cloudy days provides beautiful and well balanced light that enhances details in darker areas. Rain drops on leaves make for excellent macro photography images and wet leaves turn the leaves on fire. Eliminate overcast sky by using your telephoto lens to achieve a tighter, more Intimate Landscape composition that is more beneficial and interesting.

Iris flowers present the photographer with a beautiful floral subject. Forms are very unique and the flower comes in beautiful hues of white, purple or yellow. Usually I stumble upon them along the banks of Halls Pond or at its formal garden when I pursue local bird photography. On my last trip to the New Hampshire White Mountains I explored Franconia Notch State Park. Flume Brook was nicely filled with water due to a few rain events the days before my arrival. Peak autumn colors during New England fall foliage were imminent made for a spectacular photo tour to the Whites. This image here shows Table Rock, a small section of Conway granite that has been exposed and outcropped for hundreds of years. This scenic cascading water section is about 500 feet long and 75 feet wide and has plenty of photo opportunities.

Positioned in the mid section of Table Rock I found an outcrop that beautifully displayed the cascading waters of Flume Brook. I incorporated the glorious fall foliage in the back to provide the essence of this magical place. A Polarizing Filter extended exposure times while also eliminating unwanted glare on leaves and wet surfaces. When I am not out and about exploring the beautiful state and national parks/sites of the Northeast I often keep myself busy with local macro photography in and around Boston. The Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Worcester, MA provides plenty of photo opportunities for the local insect macro photographer. The array of tiny beings in their miniature world seems to be endless at this sanctuary and I always encounter something new or learn a bit more about them. A visit is always inspiring and leaves me asking for more. This time heavy showers on and off were rather annoying and while I was looking for shelter, so were the bugs! I had no idea but now it makes so much sense. A blackish tiny dragonfly for example protected itself from the rain under the petals of a nearby cone flower while others were less lucky and got fully drenched. The historic Willard Beach fishing shacks at Fisherman's Point in South Portland, Maine fell victim to an angry sea and were washed into the ocean during a powerful New England storm. There are many elements of design, which include shape, line, pattern and texture. When combined, we experience form within a two-dimensional media. Each of these can make or break a photograph. I consider them equally important, but I look at the element of form as the most important element of art.

Forms are defined by their lines, shapes, and volume. Lines define the subject and determine its shape. Volume, from front to back, top to bottom and side to side, along with complimenting light is what makes a photo three-dimensional.

Photographing form can be capturing an overall contour of a three-dimensional object - say, a flower or composing an image from an unusual perspective and capturing its shape in an abstract way.

First and foremost, lines border our photographic object and, therefore, define its shape. Secondly, they effectively lead a viewer into and through a photograph. Naturally, when a viewer explores a photograph, his eyes move along the lines within or along the edges of an object. Compositional lines successfully used in photography pull the viewer into the photograph, either towards the main subject or through the scenery. Lines can be straight, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved or converging. Used effectively, each can have a positive impact, enhancing a photograph and creating a mood. Photo Tip #1: Utilize the Rule of Thirds as a Starting Point for Your Composition

Don't use the Rule of Thirds as a set rule; more as a guideline or starting point for a more interesting and pleasing photographic composition. In Landscape Photography it is best to place the horizon in accordance to the importance of the sky; with dramatic sky formations placing the horizon in the lower third will give the sky more preference, for images with stronger foregrounds and weaker cloud or sky formations a horizon in the upper third of the image is more preferred. Usually locating the horizon in the middle makes a photo ordinary and static. An exception to the just said would be a grand landscape lake reflection. It is easy to apply the same approach to Flower Photography where laying the focus or point of interest within the flower at one of the four intersections has great impact by leaving room for the viewer to explore the image but also to be drawn back to the focus point.

East Boston provides one of the best photo locations for Boston Skyline Photography at sunset. The sun usually sinks behind the cityscape and turns the sky into a mixture of blue and orange. Practical flower photography tips at your hand from my Nature Photography Blog.

In recent weeks I have been exploring and chasing the light on Cape Ann, located just a short drive north of Boston. Singing Beach is one of my favorite beaches in New England as it hidden by a scenic cliff.

Early morning is a great time to be at this location and make the best of a sunrise adventure. Beach crowds haven't arrived yet and the lighting is beautiful during dawn. This seascape photography image was taken only minutes before the sun peaked above the horizon. The sky was beautifully painted in orange and blue hues while the Atlantic Ocean surf gently greeted the sand.

I set up tripod and gear near the incoming ocean waters while studying any obviously patterns and getting wet feet. Once I composed a pleasing composition of the sea view I waited for the right wave to hit the beach.

Aperture was set to f/11 allowing an exposure time of 1/20 of a second at ISO100. A split ND filter balanced the light in the darker foreground against the brighter and colorful sky. During post processing I removed dust spots and other imperfections, adjusted lighting, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final image of Cape Ann Harmony.

Moving water has become one of my favorite objects. These scenes are difficult to photograph but make for beautiful subjects. Sudbury River was one of my first of this kind. I first discovered the scene on a trip to one of my daugther's soccer games. The Fall foliage peak was almost over. When we came around the corner in our car I caught a glimpse of the bridge with the Sudbury river and committed the image to memory. Needless to say we won the game. Although the next day was overcast I decided to go back and work the object. Climbing down to the river was quite a hassle and adventure because of the slippery rocks and boulders but worth while. Columbus day weekend is fall foliage peak and prime season for Northern New England and I spent a couple of days in Bar Harbor, Maine to visit Acadia National Park. Boston Harbor makes for great photography during sunrise and sunset and offers many interesting subjects. Sail Boston and its arrival of 50 plus tall ships from around the world made it exceptional. My schedule allowed to head out one night and I played it save by exploring Fan Pier and the Boston waterfron for photo options. In these 2 photos of a purple iris I used a black cardboard as the backdrop. Dark backgrounds really make the colors of a flower pop and give the image a touch of elegance. Usually I choose a large enough black cardboard from Staples that I position behind the floral photographic object using the backrest of a chair for support. The Boston Charles River is famous for its stunning views of Beacon Hill and the Back Bay skyline. Many local and travel photographers are drawn to this hot spot in Cambridge. I am no different and I stop by Memorial Drive regularly, chasing the light for my next Pictures of Boston galleries addition. During my last Boston photo tour I arrived well before sunset and people in sailboats, kayaks, small motor boats and on paddle boats were still enjoying a beautiful summer day on the waters.

I set up on memorial Drive, not far from the Massachusetts Avenue bridge, for stunning views of the familiar Boston architecture and the new Millennium Tower at downtown crossing. Known as Millie, the building is a newcomer in the Boston cityscape and is the third Tallest Skyscraper in Boston. I incorporated sailboats and the skyline reflections as foreground features while the main subject of the Boston skyline was struck by the last light of the day, painting the city in warm hues. Aperture was set to f/11 resulting in an exposure time of 1/50 of a second at ISO200. A hand-held split neutral density filter balanced the darker Charles River scenery and skyline against the brighter sunset sky.

During post processing I followed my my routine workflow removing dust spots and imperfections, adjusting lighting, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final Boston Charles River skyline photography image Charles River Sailboats with Boston Millennium Tower.

Last week I went back to the local botanical greenhouse at Wellesley College. It is only a 20 to 25 minutes drive from my house and I only discovered it recently. It is a hidden gem and it helps me to stay focused on my flower photography during the frigid New England winter months that otherwise would not be very productive. This time I shared the greenhouse with a garden club on a tour ... Read it all .

A week ago severe thunderstorms ripped through New England and Boston from late afternoon into the night. I always wanted to photograph the Boston Skyline at twilight with lightning flashes and saw great potential to finally capture my vision in a photo. Approximately an hour before nightfall I made my way over to the Museum of Science parking location. The upper parking deck is a fabulous skyline photo location at all times and I figured if I pick the one beneath I would be safe, dry and still get a decent view of the city. Turned out I was pretty much right. Upon arrival I set up tripod and camera a few feet away from the building edge so rain would hit my lens. A Canon 28-70 zoom lens allowed for some compositional flexibility and all what was left was patiently waiting for the lightning show to start. It did not take long when the sky turned completely dark and the lightning and thunder rolled in. I immediately started shooting but it was a bit dicey when the storm unfolded right above me. 1. John Hancock Tower
The John Hancock Tower is the tallest skyscraper in Boston at 790 feet and 60 floors. The tower was recently renamed to 200 Clarendon. It is also known as the Plywood Palace or John Hancock Building. This jewel of modern architecture is best photographed from Memorial Drive or the parking garage at the Museum of Science. In both locations one can create beautiful reflections of the tower in the Charles River. I like to capture the tallest building with the second tallest skyscraper in Boston.

2. Boston Prudential Center
The Pru is the second largest building in Boston at 750 feet tall and 52 floors. I really like the facades of this 1968 constructed building and how it towers over Back Bay. As 200 Clarendon, the Boston Prudential Center is best photographed from the Cambridge side of the Charles River and the parking garage of the Museum of Science.

3. The Millennium Tower
The Millennium Tower in Boston was recently constructed at downtown crossing and reaches 690 feet into the sky across 60 floors. This modern skyscraper is also know now as Millie and it blends beautifully in the existing Boston skyline. I am still exploring the best locations to photograph this new architectural gem but Memorial Drive is definitely on that list.

Incorporate beautiful skyline reflections in calm rivers, ponds, lakes or other available wet surfaces. In this Boston skyline photography picture I utilized the fountain and pool of the Christian Science Plaza next to the Prudential Center in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston to my advantage. Setting tripod up low allowed me to capture the entire dominance of these 3 skyscraper and Boston Landmarks across the city and in the water reflection.

Worcester, MA is only a short 45 minute drive west along the Massachusetts turnpike and I frequently visit the Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary to pursue macro photography. I always wondered about the oil film that can be observed between the pond and the upland when exploring the wildlife sanctuary Hall's Pond in Brookline. The week before Memorial Day we went to visit Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park in Maine. It is a good 5 hour drive north from Boston but no doubt worth the trip any time we make it. Mount Desert Island and the park always stand for good times, beautiful nature photography but also great outdoor adventures that includes hiking, biking, canoeing and more. We enjoyed hiking around Jordan Pond and The South Bubble, having afternoon tea and the famous popovers at the Jordan Pond House and browsing the streets of Bar Harbor where businesses were buzzing and most of the restaurants, galleries and shops were open for business. As Memorial Day weekend passed the crowds disappeared and we had to share the great outdoors with only a few. It will only get busier from here when the summer crowds arrive and cruise ships with plenty of passengers stop for a day. The night before full moon when I was just driving back from a foggy photo shoot along the Park Loop road of Acadia National Park I realized the opportunity for a shot that I had on my bucket list for many years. The sky suddenly opened up for a few minutes in the evening, while twilight was fast approaching. Instead of turning right to our motel I made a quick left turn down Main Street towards the harbor. I immediately found a parking spot at the harbor parking area which made it very convenient. Only a few steps away I set up tripod and camera gear. The Wayside Inn Grist Mill in Sudbury Massachusetts on a beautiful spring morning. I am glad I hung around a bit since the sky finally opened and the scenery became alive. The warm morning sunlight painted the tree canopies in beautiful spring colors which stand in nice contrast with the darker foreground of the historic landmark. A long exposure setting conveys the flowing water of the brook in front of the scenic New England view and across the waterfall at the Sudbury Grist Mill.

In this nature macro photography blog post I compiled some of my personal favorite Raindrop Photography Artwork in a collage. The selection varies from flowers drenched in raindrops to photos of a single raindrop on a blade of grass. All pictures were taken locally in the beautiful natural environment of my home state of Massachusetts where I benefited from my own Exposure and Flower Photography Tips.

Originally I was shooting for raindrops on leaves in the Boston Arnold Arboretum but the wind made it impossible to capture a sharp image that day. Around Herring River - Cape Cod

On our way back in the evening from a bicycling tour around Martha's Vineyard and hoping to bump into the Obamas, I noticed the red boat in the Herring River at an overpass near Harwich, MA. I immediately decided to come back here the next morning knowing that nobody would move the boat if I just get there early enough to work the object. Next morning I fell out of bed trying not to wake everybody else up, jumped in the car and did the 35 minute drive over to the location on route 28. Not that I was going too fast that morning but luckily a fellow driver warned me with his headlights to slow down a little because of a police car checking the speed limit further down the road. All I needed now was to get pulled over in the wee hours and get a ticket. Finally arriving at the location I was relieved that the boat was still there. The sun was already up, partly painting the boat in the glory morning hour light. I often get carried away by certain scenes and start shooting following my instincts instead of analyzing the scene. First I captured the boat directly from the parking lot but then made my way towards the overpass where I kept shooting. I then crossed the bridge and moved closer to the boat incorporating the grass in the front into the composition. At that point I also decided to change my lens range to 300mm lens zooming in more and achieving a narrower, more intimate view of the dinghy. It was a very quiet and windless morning which made it a good day to capture water reflections. Once I got the image I wanted I made my way back towards the overpass. Here I stopped one more time to arrange and capture this additional frame. I now anxiously watch the weather forecast because I will be back for sure on an early foggy morning ... can you imagine the possibilities!

Post sunset is one of my favorite times to take photographs. I regularly go out and capture the Boston skyline at twilight on days that I am not occupied hunting for nature photographs. The best time is 20 to 30 minutes after the sun has set. The optimum light does not last long. Last winter there was an unusual population of Snowy Owls across New England. While talking to other birders I learned that there was an interruption of food supply further north which drove the birds further south. Some didn't make the journey and died of starvation. One prime location close to Boston is Parker River National wildlife refuge, and Sandy Point State Reservation on Plum Island. It is a year-round birding paradise and in the winter birders and nature lovers flog in from around the area to get a glimpse of the beautiful Snowy Owl. After purchasing a camera and lenses, a steady tripod is one of the next most important investments for a photographer. High quality photography images are rarely accomplished when a camera is hand held. A tripod is a must have photography gear for low light skyline, landscape or seascape photography during the early morning, late afternoon and evening. During twilight or night photography exposure times become even longer and it will be all about that base. Nature reflection was taken during a trip west of Boston during peak Fall season in 2006. I decided to explore Hopkinton State Park but was not happy with my production of images there. It was a pretty frustrating photo excursion until I decided to leave the park and drive further along the bordering lake. At a pullout I parked my car and explored a nearby river streaming into the lake. I snapped a few tree reflections directly from the main road overpass but then discovered a path to the left banks of the river. From here things finally turned around. Close-ups of mushroom and leaves, moss covered trees and the peak Fall colors pulled me further and further along the path. About half to three quarters of a mile down the path this unexpected rock formation appeared. I immediately knew that I had a special image in front of me and started working it. The hard part was to find a spot with unlimited view of the rock formation and the Fall colors in the background. Once that spot was found I set up my tripod and camera and framed my image. I choose a mid-range focal length to cut out the boring overcast sky and selected a minimum aperture setting for maximum depth of field. I laid the focus point on the rocks since this was my main object and then started shooting away while bracketing the image to ensure proper exposure. I am always tempted to go back because it is such a great treasure and I feel I haven't explored all possibilities with this image.

Boston is a great destination for tourists and photographers alike. The largest city north of New York City on the East coast of the United States of America offers so many sites to explore and there is really no best time to visit. New England is famous for its abundant fall foliage season and autumn with its vibrant colors is one of my most favorite times of the year. I look forward to it year-round and it is way to short. Photo Tips for better photography picture in foggy and misty conditions:

Photo Tip #1: The camera meter is easily tricked by fog. Metering without compensation will underexpose the fog photography picture. Therefore we have to adjust the exposure. A good ballpark number is +1 stop and exposure bracket at 1/2 or 1/3 stops.

Photo Tip #2: The autofocus system of your camera has a hard time finding a focus point in foggy conditions. Switch to manual focus instead and use the magnifying feature, properly adjusting the focus and pinpoint it on the spot.

Photo Tip #3: Incorporating foreground features in our compositions will make for better and more interesting photography images. Ensure your elements in front of your lens are in focus; those elements will become your main subjects while the rest of the composition disappears into the foggy scenery.

Photo Tip #4: Avoid camera shake by using a tripod. One also might increase the ISO setting to increase shutter speeds for a better chance of a quality image when hand-holding the camera.

Photo Tip #5: Routinely check your lens for water droplets or condensation and keep the gear dry; those droplets do not make for a better photograph.

Overall, these filters increase color saturation, boost blue sky, add cloud contrast, control reflections and add neutral density to lengthen exposure times for blurred, impressionistic images.

Central Massachusetts and the Greater Boston Area has many attractions that travelers are drawn to. New England fall foliage in this neck of the woods arrives mid to late October. No difference this year. I finally explored the possibilities of a wooden arch bridge that spans the Charles River. This footbridge is known as Sargent Footbridgeand was built in the 1920's on the foundation of the Sawin Dam. This Natick historic landmark makes for fine photography in itself. Upon arrival however, I noticed a Great Blue Heron adding to the composition. The bird was quietly hunting for his dinner allowing me to set up tripod and Canon 5d Mark IV, equipped with a 70-200mm lens and 1.4 telezoom converter. The peaceful urban wildlife scenery did not last long as a bunch of kayaks came to close for the birds comfort.

Beantown is packed with picturesque landmarks; charming neighborhoods like Back Bay, Charlestown or Beacon Hill and its old and modern architecture make for great cityscape photography at all times of day. The 2009 Fall foliage season is now winding down here in the Boston area of New England and as every year has provided us with lots of photo opportunities. Inspired by my recent photography tour to the New Hampshire White Mountains a couple weeks back, I traveled to southern New England capturing the fall foliage colors in Rhode Island and Connecticut this past week. Fall colors were gorgeous and my first travel destination brought me to Stepstone Falls. It was a bit hard to find and driving down a winding dirt road I finally arrived at my desired destination. The flow of water was quite disappointing but I tried to make the best of it and worked with the small cascades and waterfalls at hand. The Flume in Franconia Notch State Park is a natural gorge in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The beautiful cascading Flume Brok, a mountain stream, flows through this narrow canyon. The Flume Gorge is at the base of Mt. Liberty and about 800 feet long. The covered Conway granite walls rise up to 90 feet and are covered in moss, flowers and ferns. Positioned at the bottom of the gorge I equipped my camera with a wide angle lens to capture this magical place in its complete glory. A polarizing filter eliminated unwanted glare on the flora and granite walls. Combined with the low light a Long Exposure Photography image was easily achievable, thereby creating silky waters streams of the tumbling Flume Brook waters.

During digital post processing I cleaned up the image from dust spots, adjusted lighting, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final New Hampshire photo image of Flume Gorge.

Last September I spent a week on Mount Desert Island. I used the opportunity to photograph in some of my favorite spots in Acadia National Park. Jordan Pond is famous for its beautiful views of the Bubbles. The Bubbles consist of the South and the North Bubble, a couple of scenic mountains that make for great photography subjects. Parking is pretty easy since the famous Jordan Tea House is nearby providing plenty of spaces at night. This is popular photography spot and I wasn't on my own. Despite rainy and lousy weather I made my way over to the Brookline Minot Rose garden yesterday. The surrounding park was recently renovated and there is a re-opening celebration and rose stroll planned for today. Looking outside my window right now it appears that the celebration will be postponed to the rain date of 26 June 2011. Heading south of Boston on Route 3 brings you right to Cape Cod, a pristine summer get away and vacation destination for many New Englanders. I routinely make the 1 and a half hour drive down to the Cape to capture its beautiful coastal scenery at all times of the day and in all seasons. During my last photo trip this summer I returned to Paine's Beach and Landing to photograph an oyster farming setting with baskets, cases, and beds. I always love when I find a floral photography object that I can beautifully isolate against an attractive background. My last picture of this kind I found on my last visit to the local Wildlife Sanctuary Hall's Pond in Brookline, Massachusetts. Last weekend we spent in Maine with family. Sunday morning I had a chance to explore the family garden which was packed with little critters. While photographing insects a Slender Spreadwing damselfly landed on a nearby flower. It is quite amazing how gracious damselflies look when they hang on to a floral. In seconds with tripod and camera in place I switched from landscape to vertical format, manually focused on the the damselfly head and snagged a few pictures. The magnifying feature on my camera allowed me to pin point focus. The camera self timer combined with a tripod minimized camera shake and ensured best image quality.

Maine Acadia National Park Bass Harbor Head Light is arguable one of the Most Scenic New England Lighthouses. The picturesque lighthouse is located on beautiful Mount Desert Island within Maine Acadia National Park on the southeast corner of MDI. The lighthouse beautifully towers over the swirling Atlantic Ocean and seacoast, marking the entrance to Bass Harbor and Blue Hill Bay. Bass Harbor lighthouse is dramatically located on the edge of rugged cliffs.

On the way home from my last photo tour to Rockport, Massachusetts I discovered a new location for Boston skyline photography. While driving home I noticed a spot that may have potential and I instantly decided to get off the highway at the next exit and to explore this photo opportunity. Upon arrival at the potential area I got out of the car, walked around and looked for any open views through tree line that would allow to photograph some of Boston most iconic landmarks. So glad I made that decision and scouted the area as the view was somewhat unique as it shows the Tobin Bridge with the Zakim Bridge, John Hancock Tower and Prudential Center. I have not come across a Boston photo like this and continued and was pumped to make my way back as soon as possible. That evening I went back to explore the twilight angle of the vista. Photo Tip #13 of 20: Use negative space wisely by making sure your photography subject is the primary visual element unless there is a specific reason you want to minimize it. The absence of picture content does not automatically mean the absence of interest. In fact, negative space often adds interest as it often conveys a stronger emphasis on the photographic subject. Monday morning I stepped out of bed in the wee hours and made my way over to one of my favorite Boston Skyline Photography locations; the Boston University bridge which spans over the Mass Pike, a railroad track and the Charles River. I like this location as it provides the photographer with a pristine view of the Charles River banks and the Boston skyline landmarks such as the John Hancock Tower or the Prudential Center.

It turned out to be time well spend. The sunrise was gorgeous providing me with ample lighting and sky colors. Finding a pleasing composition was not an easy task but I settled on a picture that included aforementioned architecture and the famous Citgo Sign on Kendall Square near Boston Fenway Park. Camera equipped with a 24-70mm lens and steady on a tripod I was taking my photographs when suddenly the lights of the Citgo Sign turned on again. Photo Tip #8 of 20: When in doubt, leave things out and remove them from your composition. If there is something in the picture that is irrelevant to the photography subject or that somehow does not support the cause, try eliminating it. In this tree picture from Acadia National Park I eliminated the boring overcast sky and by the select focus on some of the tree trunks and moos I was able to eliminate distracting branches and trees while producing a more intimate New England Landscape Photography composition of the scenery. >>> Find More Photo Tips

When I am not hiking or wandering the beautiful state and national parks/sites of the Northeast I keep myself occupied with local macro or butterfly photography in and around Boston. A prime destination during the summer for photographing macro images of insects in their natural habitat is the Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Worcester, MA. During the long winters of New England I make the 2 hour drive out from Boston to Magic Wings in South Dartmouth. Magic Wings is a beautiful butterfly garden that provides the nature photographer with unlimited photo opportunities and a fun outing for a day.

Photo Tip #1: Turn off autofocus when time and photo object permits and get into the habit of using manual focus instead. Use the magnifying camera feature to precisely pin your focus point. Works wonder when the insect remains still but when the bug is on the move consider final sharp focusing through carefully moving camera and lens back and forward.

Photo Tip #2: Get up early and take advantage of insects being often lethargic and moving slowly. This will allow for a calmer photo gear set up without the insect immediately fleeing the scene. A carefully composed image will result in more attractive compositions.

Capturing the Boston Skyline at various times of the day has become a top priority for me. I love the quietude of a early morning shoot when I have the city almost for myself. Late afternoon into twilight provide beautiful lighting and one can feel the energy of Boston and its people coming alive. Once the twilight has passed there is no need to pack up our gear. The nightlight provides the photographer with fabulous photo opportunities as well. I like how the dark sky makes the city lights and neon signs pop in front of it. Headlights and rear lights of moving cars commuting into Boston turn into white and red stripes respectively. Yesterday it was raining on and off in Boston but nevertheless I made my way over to the Boston Arnold Arboretum for a macro photography shoot. We spent a couple of nights in New York City the other weekend where I got a chance to photograph a classic view of the lower Manhattan New York City skyline at twilight. I regularly visit the beaches of Cape Cod Bayfor sunset photography. Needless to say sunsets never disappoint here. No difference on one of my latest trips where I photographed at Skaket Beach. This was a new beach and it took a bit of time and exploring before settling on a pleasing composition. I finally succeeded when I found some nice beach grass leading into the picture. While the sun was nearing the horizon colors in the sky exploded. A saturated blue with clouds colored in pink and orange dominated the sky. The spectacle was beautifully reflected in the Cape Cod Bay and beach. I used a split ND filter to balance the bright sunset sky with the darker foreground directly in front of me. Aperture setting was f/14 providing a shutter speed of half a second at ISO100. During routine post processing I adjusted lighting, contrast, color saturation before removing imperfections and sharpening the final Cape Cod photography image of

A few days ago I visited one of my favorite photo locations for Boston Skyline Photography in East Boston, Massachusetts. I like this location as it provides one of the best views of downtown and the Boston Harbor. I also discovered some wood pilings from an old pier in the waters that make for great foreground features to add interest and depth to a photograph. Effectively used in a composition the pilings also lead a viewer in the and through the frame. That day, I arrived a bit early for twilight photography. There were beautiful last clouds rushing through the picture as the sky was clearing towards the end of the day. Equipped with a neutral density filter I extended exposure times to blur out the fast moving clouds and provide a sense of cloud movement. I often visit Memorial Drive to photograph the Boston Skyline as it provides ample views of the city and its landmarks. I am starting a new photo blog series where I provide some guidance on taking care of your
Photography Art Investments. In this first installment I will be talking about the do's and don't's of taking care of your photography aluminum metal prints so you can enjoy it for many years to come. In the coming weeks and following blog posts I will further discuss canvas prints, photo prints and acrylic prints.

A photography aluminum print brings artworks to life, it's stylish and adds depth. The high gloss of photo metal prints complement the rich colors of any photography image to produce the most stunning results. So how do you get the most out of those art prints?

- Do not put an aluminum print face down on a hard surface as you may scratch its surface.

- Do not drop it as the metal print may get dented.

- Clean an aluminum print by gently wiping it using only a soft dry cloth.

- Do not use Windex or other cleaning solvents. A cloth dampened with water may be used on occasion, but only when necessary.

- Display prints with care. When resting on a surface, edges of a print may get worn over time and cause damage.

- An aluminum print shows best when it is viewed at eye level using indirect or ambient light.

- Aluminum prints look well in dim lit areas and are a perfect solution when decorating dark corners in any room where nothing else works.

- Do not use a spotlight to enhance the viewing of a print, it bounces off the metal and usually washes out the image.

Echo Lake in Maine Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island- south of Somesville and just a short drive north of Southwest Harbor. The fresh water lake is shadowed by the soaring Beech Cliffs that rise vertically from the banks of the lake. Visiting the lake at sunset makes for a peaceful and calm outdoor experience. The views of the lake with the mountains is straight out of a magazine. I stopped here a couple of times but never captured the photography image I envisioned. On my most recent photo tour to Acadia National Park I was on my way to a different location but was running late and about to miss the magic light. I spontaneously decided to stop at this nature delight and take my chances. I knew about the rocks and figured it should make for great composition when effectively used as dominant foreground features that lead the viewer into the picture.

Upon arrival I found my spot and set up tripod and camera. A wide angle lens provided the extensive view of the lake with surrounding mountains. In order to overcome the high contrast between dark foreground and bright sky I applied a Graduated Neutral Density Filter in the field. In addition a Neutral Density Filter lengthened the overall exposure to multiple seconds. Aperture setting was f/8, providing a long exposure value of 30 seconds at ISO400.

Using photoshop I combined 3 photos with different exposure times into a final HDR Photography image. During post processing I removed image imperfections, adjusted lighting, color saturation and contrast before sharpening the final image of Echo Lake.

I spent a couple of nights in Dennis on Cape Cod last week and was able to shoot during sunset on Mayflower Beach. There were a couple of photographers in their beach chairs patiently waiting for the light. When I passed by we chatted it up and we agreed that it wouldn't be much of a sunset tonight because the sun was about to disappear behind the clouds. Minutes after sunset twilight kicked in and I walked out into the Cape Cod Bay to a large boulder I spotted. The rock turned out to be a nice anchor for the viewer and an interesting ... LEARN MORE.

Another example of beautiful flower photography at your door step. To get this shot I went to one of my favorite neighborhood spots, Hall's Pond Wildlife Sanctuary in Brookline, MA. The wildlife is amazing for a little pond in the middle of the city. Over the years I have captured some precious images there. I go regularly to explore the sanctuary, including its formal garden, where I composed this lily stamen close-up. While strolling the garden I was attracted by the greenish yellowish color of the lily. My goal was to have one of the stamens in focus and keep the others blurry. The lily petals were supposed to provide the background. In order to achieve this effect I set the camera aperture to maximum possible and zoomed all the way out to a 80mm lens setting. This combination provided me with the limited depth of field I was looking for. I snapped a series of photographs for optimal exposure and left only sharpening the image to post processing.

Exploring a local wildlife sanctuary can be very rewarding and beneficial for our photography. Usually one can find birds and other wildlife that are willing photographic objects, beautiful flowers, or insects of all sorts. My last local photo tour brought me back to the Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary in Worcester, MA. I always love to create Abstract Flower Photography images by using their beautiful forms and vivid colors to my advantage. Monthly Photography Tip: Besides cameras and lenses, a tripod is one of the most important investments for a nature photographer. High quality nature photographs are rarely achieved when hand holding your camera. A tripod is essential for low light during the morning, evening and twilight, for shooting wildlife, for macros and for experimenting with impressionistic photography. It not only steadies your shooting equipment for maximum image quality, it also will help you discover the world of photography. You are more likely to step back, think and compose the photograph. You will ask yourself: do I have a straight horizon, do I have sufficient depth of field or shall I open up the aperture setting to minimize depth of field, are there distracting elements in the foreground or background of my composition, do I even have a composition?

I personally prefer a ball-and-socket head with quick release for easy and fast adjustments. My tripod has no center column and the legs spread independently for setup on uneven terrain. The tripod collapses to almost ground level allowing me to explore ground level objects and shooting from different angles and perspectives. It is not too heavy for the longer photo excursions and trips I often pursue in the national and state parks of New England.

As an alternative, I sometimes bring a bean bag that allows me an easy, inexpensive setup at even lower levels then possible with a tripod. I also use it on rocks or positioning a telephoto lens on the hood or the roof of my car. Ready to go bean bags can be found at local photo dealers. You also can fill up your own 1 or 2 gallon size bag or freezer bag with dried beans. Add beans until the bag is nearly full but still flexible. Remove the air, zip up and you are ready to shoot.

For this Stage Harbor lighthouse photograph I arrived late at Harding's beach parking lot; the sun was already setting. I immediately was side tracked by a hand full of kite surfers. It was a struggle to freeze the surfers because of their fast speed and my camera's low shutter speed. I adjusted my camera ISO setting to allow for faster shutter speeds and continued shooting. Although there was some waste produced in the end I got the shots of the Nantucket Sound kite surfers hat I was hoping for. Meanwhile the tide was coming in strong and I was a little worried about getting back in the dark after shooting the lighthouse. Recently I visited Naples beach where I was looking for suitable nature photography objects. Opposite of Boston downtown and its financial district across the Boston Harbor is East Boston. East Boston provides tremendous Boston Skyline Views from where one can admire the skyline and the many boats crossing the Boston harbor. Using water reflections in a composition to lead a viewer into and through a picture is a very effective compositional element. In this latest night photography image I used this feature to guide the viewer into the Boston cityscape and towards its historic architecture landmark of the Custom House of Boston. Clear blue sky made for a picture perfect photography night out with a beautiful skyline reflection.

Aperture in this image was f/14 with an exposure time of 30 seconds at ISO100. During my routine image processing steps in Photoshop I removed dust spots, adjusted lighting, contrast and color saturation before sharpening the final Boston Night photography image.

Witnessing a sunrise is always very special but becomes magical in Maine Acadia National Park. Boston never disappoints and it's been another exiting time to be in town. New England photography Historic Bass Harbor Lighthouse has been selected into the fine art exhibit as part of the Cape Cod Art Association's 2016 exhibit "The National". This annual open juried exhibition embraces talent from across the United States and is always one of CCAA’s biggest and most prestigious fine art gallery exhibits of the year. Any subject matter was considered and jurors take special consideration of the pieces that fit the theme for Best American Landscape. All artwork will be for sale.

The art exhibit is organized by the Cape Cod Art Association and runs from July 11, 2016 through August 21, 2016.

Regular gallery hours: Monday through Saturday - 9AM until 4PM, Sunday 12PM until 4PM.

I am honored to announce that my New England photography achieved Highly Commended honors during the final round of judging by a Panel of World Famous Photographers at the 2013 USA Landscape Photographer of the Year photo contest. 7 photo images made it into the semi finals and 4 made it through as contest finalists where winners, runner ups and highly commended honors were selected. The contest received thousands of entries from 34 countries around the world.

The winners were announced on 30 May 2014 in the USA Today print edition and online. Popular Photography featured the main prize winners on 1st June online and in a feature article and winners’ gallery in their July edition of Popular Photography. The photo magazine hit the News stands on 7th June and subscribers’ doormats on 1st June 2014. Winners, runner ups and highly commended photography artworks are featured in the Winners Gallery on the contest's official website.

2012 was a fabulous and creative year for me and my photography. This post reflects and showcase the creme de la creme of my most memorable and exceptional photos of the year 2012. Equipped with new photo gear in hand, I was able to get into closer range for frame filling alligator and bird Wildlife Photography in Florida. This not only made for better photography but also for an overall safer photo experience. Instead I battled other obstacles like kneeing into a pile of nasty biting ants while photographing an alligator portrait in Florida Everglades National Park ... never will forget that! Creating and Selling Art is a tough business and as in any other business (sports, modeling, fashion) with lots of people following their dream they become easy targets for shady predators. Keep in mind that nobody really will do the job for you and especially not for free. It all boils down to us doing the leg work of promoting ourselves and our art and how badly we want to succeed. This is based on a personnel experience. I fell for a rip-off that qualifies as an artist scam when I was tired of online marketing and looking for a break. I fell for Tuck Tucker who also goes by the name Bill Tucker and his shady online business Best Art Marketing. Bill also operates under websites like The Art Marketing Agency and his latest website Visual Arts Marketing which is geared towards all artists. He targets photographers and artists in his Fine Art Photography Resource group on LinkedIn. My experience with his false advertisement promises and art scam inspired me to compile the following tips to avoid email spam, artist scam and rip off or fraud. In addition I provide you with my personal experience with Tuck Tucker and Best Art Marketing.

Tip#1: Keep your guard up at all times and never let them down. Double-check with other artists, research online, and do not trust anybody. If you suspect an artist scam most likely it is one.
