New Bedford, Massachusetts, is a city with a rich cultural heritage, particularly when it comes to the Irish. The city has a long history of Irish immigration and settlement, and its Irish population has played an integral role in shaping its culture and identity.
One of the most visible and poignant symbols of this heritage is the Irish Heritage Memorial located at East Rodney French Boulevard. This memorial was built to commemorate the contributions of the Irish community to New Bedford's history and development.
The memorial consists of a large Celtic cross, made of granite and surrounded by a circular plaza. The cross is inscribed with the names of prominent Irish-American figures, including John F. Kennedy, Eamon de Valera, and William Butler Yeats. The plaza is paved with bricks bearing the names of Irish families who settled in New Bedford and helped to build the city.
