Historic Gantry cranes with Freedom Tower at Gantry Plaza State Park in Queens, New York photographed on an early winter morning. Gantry Park is an urban waterfront park located in Hunters Point, Long Island City, New York. In the past the restored Gantry cranes were used to load Long Island Railroad rail car floats with industrial goods. The park offers visitors one of the most amazing views of the New York City skyline and the nearby Pepsi Sign is another local New York landmark. Views are unobstructed and make for spectacular photo opportunities at sunrise, sunset or twilight. Despite a clear sky forecast I was greeted by cloud cover this morning and the magical light on the New York skyline only lasted seconds. Once I figured that there was no potential for amazing skyline photography I paid more attention to the Gantry cranes behind me and to my delight the sky opened up and provided some great lighting. Equipped with a Neutral density filter to extend exposure times I was able to capture to create silky water effect of the East River and conveyed cloud movement within the sky.
